1 out of 10 were women

We went to see 300 yesterday.

It was a compelling epic.
In a sci-fi level medium, a timeless story was told.
The fight for freedom is not free.
There is a cost.
Just as not fighting for freedom is not free.
The cost comes later.
I have heard bits and pieces of debates over the real message hollywood was sending us by making this movie.
These kind of debates make for good press, especially in a year of transisition.
In this country we are free to watch a movie and speak our minds.
In fact we are free to make many movies that challenge our thinking.
Some may push the limits of being good for society.
This movie came at just the right time.
There are two lessons I was thankfully reminded of:
It is good to be a strong woman that loves her husband, respects him and desires to be a help mate to him.
It is also good to know that there is the capacity for heroism in us. Yes, the reverse is also true. Humans can be evil.
As women we need strong women as role models. Ones that love men and are there for them as strong partners.
As people we need hope.
Heros
Offering
Passion
&
Experience
We need to be reminded that although it can be very hard to do the right thing.
There are those of us who have and therefore it is possible for us as well.
Excellent movie
Even though only 1 out of 10 attending the movie were women, I would recommend it to my friends.

Things You Don't Know When You Are 3

I had the pleasure of watching a young girl feed ducks.
It was a wonderful sight.
Her your expression was one of total awe as the ducks swam to meet her.
They had seen this movie before.
With passion the little girl threw handful after handful of feed to the lake.
The ducks went after the food in a peaceful fashion.
For a few moments the girl's parents got distracted.
The little girl had decided that if a little was good, a lot was better.
She lifted a large bag over her head past the fence rail.
Mid-way through what looked like a coach's Gatorade celebratory plunge..
Her father caught the bag before the entire contents could land onto the family of ducks below.
Two things happened next that amused me.
The patient father explained to his daughter that full bags of food thrown onto ducks was not the same thing as feeding the ducks. Things you just don't know when you are 3.
The second thing thing was what happened to one strong willed duck.
When just a bit of feed was being thrown out, nothing was noticeable about this particular duck.
When a feast was thrown out, greed took over.
What is funny is that he spent so much time chasing the other ducks away.
He would rather the feed sink to the bottom of the lake than to share the good fortune.
Greed, even in ducks, not pretty. Whoda thought?
Something I did not know at 47.

Makes me wonder what we will learn at 67.

No Place Like Home

Home
There is so much potential comfort in that word.
The child in us aches at times with a longing...
"I just want to go home"
Things make sense at home
There is more control at home than out in the world.
The world can be a big and scary place.
"There is no place like home"

A timeless call to encourage us to appreciate what we have and protect and nurish it.
I have been on the road more than I would like lately.
It has had one striking benefit.
I am so thankful I have a home to come back to.
